IMSP as a National Center of Excellence in the Basic Sciences

The Institute of Mathematical Sciences and Physics (IMSP), a degree-granting unit under the College of Arts and Sciences, was one of six National Centers of Excellence in the Basic Sciences that were created on March 23, 1983 by Presidential Decree No. 1416 through Executive Order No. 889. The NCOE’s were established to help advance science and technology in the country, and specifically, to strengthen and broaden the national capability to train scientific leaders and conduct research in the basic sciences.

IMSP Physics faculty to attend 1st ASEAN Synchroton Science Camp in Thailand

Ms. Katherine M. Calamba will participate in the 1st ASEAN Synchroton Science Camp to be held in Nakhon Ratchasima Province, Thailand on 14-18 May 2012. The activity, sponsored by the Synchroton Light Research Institute (SLRI) based in Thailand, aims to build up a research and development network between the SLRI and ASEAN countries, and to encourage students to realize the important role of synchrotron technology in the development of science and technology in general. SLRI will provide funds for air fare, accommodations and meals.

Dr. Sese attends SEANN Meeting in Thailand

Dr. Rogel Mari D. Sese, the Government's Focal Person for the Space Science Education Program, will attend the Optical SEANN (Southeast Asian Astronomy Network) Working Group Meeting on April 29 to May 2, 2012 at the National Astronomical Research Institute of Thailand (NARIT), Chiang Mai, Thailand. The purpose of the meeting is to determine the future research thrusts and policies in optical astronomy for Southeast Asian nations. Dr. Sese will present a short report on the status of Optical Astronomy Research in the Philippines. NARIT will provide accommodation and air fare.
